“9/11 – A THEOLOGICAL RESPONSE”
CONFERENCE SET FOR FEB. 15-16 AT CSU
FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Northern Colorado residents are invited to attend a conference titled “9/11 – A Theological Response” Feb. 15-16 at Colorado State University.
“Our goal is to engage people throughout the community in the liberating and transforming process of theological reflection,” said Jared Orsi, conference chair. “This is a rare opportunity for lay people to hear and speak with leading theologians on a topic of critical importance.”
Two keynote addresses will be given beginning at 7 p.m. on Feb. 15 in room 212 of the Eddy Building, immediately south of Morgan Library. One is by Jean Bethke Elshtain, a native of Timnath who is the Laura Spellman Rockefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics at the University of Chicago Divinity School. She is the author of Just War against Terror: The Burden of American Power in a Violent World. The other is by David Deane, former associate theologian-in residence at Blessed John XXIII University Parish and now assistant professor of systematic and historical theology at Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax, N.S. He will argue against the concept of a just war.
On Feb. 16, 10 theologically oriented responses to the events of 9/11 and its aftermath will be given by scholars, clergy, graduate and undergraduate students, and others with responses by Elshtain and Deane. These sessions, also in the Eddy Building, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Box lunches will be available for purchase.
The conference is the follow-up event to a communitywide class that Deane taught last spring at three Fort Collins churches. It is sponsored by the Theologian in Residence Program of Fort Collins. Co-sponsors are the CSU Philosophy Department, Vital Theology newsletter and the CSU/John XXIII Catholic Student Organization. An $8 donation is suggested for the Feb. 15 session and it is free to those with student I.D. and those who attended the spring class. Sessions on Feb. 16 are free to all.
